MY LIBRARY - A LIST OF IMPACTFUL BOOKS THAT HAVE SHAPED MY PERSPECTIVE, EACH RESONATING DEEPLY AND PRESENTED WITHOUT A SPECIFIC ORDER.
Medieval Art
This survey of over a thousand years of Western art and architecture, from ancient Rome to the age of exploration, introduces the reader to a period of extraordinary historical and geographical extent. The monumental arts of architecture and sculpture and the diverse minor arts of the Middle Ages are presented here within social, religious, political, and intellectual framework of lands as varied as France and Denmark, Spain and Germany. Medieval Art covers all the major monuments, describing each important work clearly and in detail. Marilyn Stokstad's descriptions are sensitive and articulate, giving the reader a sense of the beauty of the work. They also teach the reader how to look at medieval artwhich aspects of architecture, sculpture, or painting are important and for what reasons. Stylistic and iconographic issues and themes are dealt with clearly, and the author presents medieval art in an aesthetic and social context so that it can be fully understood and appreciated. The book consists of twelve chapters and covers the period from the second to the fifteenth centuries.
Metaphysics as a Guide to Morals
The decline of religion and ever increasing influence of science pose acute ethical issues for us all. Can we reject the literal truth of the Gospels yet still retain a Christian morality? Can we defend any 'moral values' against the constant encroachments of technology?
Miracle of Love
There can be no biography of him. Facts are few, stories many. He seems to have been known by different names in many parts of India, appearing and disappearing through the years. His western devotees of recent years knew him as Neem Karoli Baba, but mostly as Maharajji - a nickname so commonplace in India that one can often hear a tea vendor addressed thus. Just as he said, he was nobody. The briefest, simplest stories were his teachings. Sometimes he sat in silence . . . but bliss and peace poured down on us
On Compromise and Rotten Compromises
When is political compromise acceptable―and when is it fundamentally rotten, something we should never accept, come what may? What if a rotten compromise is politically necessary? Compromise is a great political virtue, especially for the sake of peace. But, as Avishai Margalit argues, there are moral limits to acceptable compromise even for peace. But just what are those limits? At what point does peace secured with compromise become unjust? Focusing attention on vitally important questions that have received surprisingly little attention, Margalit argues that we should be concerned not only with what makes a just war, but also with what kind of compromise allows for a just peace.
Opened Ground: Selected Poems, 1966-1996
As selected by the author, Opened Ground includes the essential work from Heaney's twelve previous books of poetry, as well as new sequences drawn from two of his landmark translations, The Cure at Troy and Sweeney Astray, and several previously uncollected poems. Heaney's voice is like no other--"by turns mythological and journalistic, rural and sophisticated, reminiscent and impatient, stern and yielding, curt and expansive" (Helen Vendler, The New Yorker)--and this is a one-volume testament to the musicality and precision of that voice. The book closes with Heaney's Nobel Lecture: "Crediting Poetry."
Parenting from the Inside Out: How a Deeper Self-Understanding Can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive
Born out of a series of parents' workshops that combined Siegel's cutting-edge research on how communication impacts brain development with Hartzell's decades of experience as a child-development specialist and parent educator, this book guides parents through creating the necessary foundations for loving and secure relationships with their children.
Paths to God: Living the Bhagavad Gita
World-renowned philosopher and spiritual teacher Ram Dass—author of the groundbreaking classic Be Here Now—presents the contemporary Western audience with a lively, accessible guide to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, the classic Hindu text that has been called the ultimate instruction manual for living a spiritual life.
